Jumping card

Tarot glossary · also jumper, flying card

A jumping card is one that slips out of the deck during shuffling, often during an overhand or riffle shuffle. Readers disagree about what to do with it. Some believe it is a message and read it first, as an extra card or as the heart of the reading; others note it and carry on; others put it straight back, since a stiff new deck or a loose shuffle makes cards fly out all the time. There is no traditional rule; it is a modern custom from reading communities. If jumpers bother you, a gentler shuffle such as washing the cards on a table cuts them down.
