How tarot math works
Every card plays a role in a reading: a resource, a beginning, a change, a loss. Each pair of roles has its own interpretation, and each card adds the situation it shows up in. Nothing is generated at random: the same cards always give the same reading.
Major or Minor
A Major Arcana card names a large theme; a Minor card shows where it lands in daily life. Two Majors read as a chapter, two Minors as the everyday.
The four elements
- Wands · Fire
- drive and will
- Cups · Water
- feeling and connection
- Swords · Air
- thought and words
- Pentacles · Earth
- work, body and money
Fire and Air feed each other, as do Water and Earth. Fire and Water pull against each other, as do Air and Earth. A Major Arcana card linked to a sign takes that sign's element; a Major linked to a planet works through its planet instead.
Numbers and court cards
Two cards of the same number are the same stage of a story in two parts of life; neighbouring numbers are one step after another. A Page, Knight, Queen or King can be a person in the situation, or a way of acting.
Hidden links
Tarot math also looks for the threads between cards that are easy to miss: a Major's planet or sign appearing inside a Minor card, signs that stand opposite each other, or two cards that share a number root. When it finds one, it shows it under the reading.
Three cards
The first card is the start, the second is the turn, and the third is where it heads.
