Pip card

Tarot glossary · also pips, number card

A pip card is one of the numbered cards of a suit, Ace to Ten, so a tarot deck has 40 of them. The word pip comes from playing cards, where it means a suit sign. In Marseille-pattern and game decks a pip card shows only an arrangement of suit signs, such as seven cups on a decorated ground, and readers interpret it through number and suit. In the Rider–Waite–Smith deck of 1909 every pip is a scene with people, which is why it is easier to read without a book. The Sola Busca deck of 1491 had already illustrated its pips. A common confusion: some readers count the Aces apart from the pips.
