Synchronicity

Tarot glossary

Synchronicity is the psychiatrist Carl Jung's word for a meaningful coincidence: two events that seem connected in meaning though neither causes the other. Jung used the term from about 1930 and set it out in a 1952 essay published alongside work by the physicist Wolfgang Pauli. Tarot readers often borrow it to describe a card that fits a situation uncannily well, and some take it as a way to think about why readings feel apt. For many readers it is the best word for what happens in a good reading. See tarot and Jung.
