Visconti-Sforza tarot

Tarot glossary · also visconti tarot

The Visconti-Sforza tarot is the name given to several hand-painted, gilded decks made in Milan in the mid-15th century for the Visconti and Sforza dukes. The best known, sometimes called the Pierpont Morgan–Bergamo deck, is usually linked with Francesco Sforza and dated to about 1450–1460; its surviving cards are divided between the Morgan Library in New York, the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo and a private collection. Other fragmentary decks of the same family are in the Brera in Milan and at Yale. They are among the oldest surviving tarot cards and have no numbers or names on the trumps. See the Visconti-Sforza tarot.
