Clarifier

Tarot glossary · also clarifying card

A clarifier is a card pulled from the remaining deck and laid beside a card the reader cannot make sense of, to add detail or a second angle. It is a modern habit, common in online communities and newer guides, rather than an old rule; you will not find it in Waite's or the Golden Dawn's methods. Readers use it sparingly, one card at a time. The risk is drawing again and again until the answer feels comfortable, so some readers avoid clarifiers entirely and sit with the difficult card instead. It differs from a significator, which is chosen before the reading to stand for the querent. See how to read tarot.
