Lenormand

Tarot glossary · also petit lenormand

A Lenormand deck has 36 cards, each with one plain image, such as the Rider, the Clover, the Ship, the House and the Tree, and often a playing-card inset. Cards are read in pairs and lines, each changing the next, and often all 36 are laid out at once in a grand tableau. The deck is named after Marie Anne Lenormand (1772–1843), a famous Paris fortune-teller, but it was sold under her name only after her death; its design follows a German parlour game of about 1799. It is not tarot: it has no arcana, no suits and no reversals. See tarot vs oracle cards.
