Oracle cards
Tarot glossary · also oracle deck
Oracle cards are divination decks that follow no shared pattern. A deck may have 36 cards or 60, words or pictures, angels, animals or plants, and each comes with its own guidebook; the creator decides what every card means. Tarot, by contrast, has a fixed 78-card structure that has held since the 15th century: 22 trumps and four suits of fourteen. Lenormand decks sit in between, with 36 standard cards and a shared tradition of meanings. People sometimes call any divination deck a tarot deck, but if it lacks the Major and Minor Arcana it is an oracle deck. Many readers use both, drawing an oracle card alongside a tarot spread.
