Queen

Tarot glossary

The Queen is the third of the four court cards in each suit, between the Knight and the King. Queens were part of tarot from the start, which sets tarot apart from many early Italian and Spanish packs that had only male courts. In the Thoth deck the Queen keeps her name but ranks differently, under a Knight who takes the King's place. Readers usually take a Queen as the suit's quality held and lived from the inside: mature, steady and receptive, where the King directs it outwards. Like any court card she can stand for a person of any gender or for an attitude the querent is asked to adopt. See court cards.
