Querent

Tarot glossary · also sitter, client

The querent is the person who asks the question in a reading, from the Latin quaerere, to seek or ask. The word was used in horary astrology long before tarot readers took it up, and it is now standard in reading guides. In a reading for someone else, the querent shuffles or chooses cards in many traditions while the reader interprets; in some, a card called the significator stands for the querent. When you read for yourself you are querent and reader at once, which is how most people use tarot today. Some readers prefer plainer words such as sitter or client. See reading tarot for yourself.
