Strength and Justice swap

In the Tarot de Marseille, Justice is card VIII and Strength is XI. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn swapped them in the late 19th century so that the cards would match its astrology, putting Strength with Leo and Justice with Libra in the order of the Hebrew letters. Waite followed this in his 1909 deck, so in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition Strength is VIII and Justice XI. Crowley's Thoth deck restored the old numbers, calling the cards Adjustment (VIII) and Lust (XI). Both orders are in use, and neither is wrong; it matters only when readers link cards by number. See Major Arcana order.
