Tarot game

Tarot glossary · also tarock, french tarot, tarocchini

The tarot game is the trick-taking game for which tarot cards were made in 15th-century Italy. Its idea was new: a fifth suit of picture cards, the trumps, beats all the ordinary suits, and the Fool acts as an excuse that can be played instead of following suit. The game spread through France, Switzerland, Austria and much of Central Europe, and versions are still played today, most widely French Tarot in France and Tarock games such as Königrufen in Austria, as well as tarocchini in Bologna and games in Sicily. Game decks often use French suits and scenes of daily life on the trumps rather than the familiar figures. See the tarot card game.
