Minchiate
Tarot glossary
Minchiate was a Florentine variant of the tarot game. Its 97 cards are the usual 56 suit cards plus the Fool and 40 numbered trumps, which add the twelve signs of the zodiac, the four elements and the virtues missing from standard tarot, such as Faith, Hope and Charity. It was played from the 16th century until it died out in the 19th. Minchiate decks are sometimes used for reading today, but they were made for play, like all early tarot. It is a separate game, not an expanded version of the 78-card deck. See tarot card game.
