Year card

Tarot glossary

A year card is a Major Arcana card assigned to one year of your life. To find it, add the day and month of your birth to the year in question, then add the digits of the total and keep reducing until the number is 22 or less; that number names a trump. Someone born on 14 March would add 14, 3 and 2026 to get 2043, then 2, 0, 4 and 3 to get 9, The Hermit. The method is a modern reading practice related to the birth card, popular from the late 20th century, and books differ on details such as whether 22 means The Fool. Readers take the card as the theme of the year and come back to it as the year unfolds. See numbers in tarot.
