Kabbalah
Tarot glossary · also qabalah, cabala
Kabbalah is a school of Jewish mysticism that took shape in medieval Spain and Provence, with the Zohar, written in the 13th century, as its central text. Renaissance Christian scholars adapted it, and later occultists built their own version, often spelled Qabalah. Tarot was first linked to the Hebrew alphabet in 1781, and in the 1850s Eliphas Lévi made the link a system. The Golden Dawn then laid the 22 trumps on the paths of the Tree of Life. Tarot has no Jewish origin, and Jewish Kabbalah has no tarot in it; the connection belongs to Western occultism. See tarot and Kabbalah.
