Suit

Tarot glossary · also suits

A suit is one of the four families of cards in the Minor Arcana, each with fourteen cards: Ace to Ten and four courts. Tarot's suits are the Italian ones, batons, cups, swords and coins, which appear in English as Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles, with variations such as Rods, Staves or Disks. They match the playing-card suits of Clubs, Hearts, Spades and Diamonds. Most modern readers link each suit with an element and an area of life, Wands with fire, Cups with water, Swords with air and Pentacles with earth; this scheme comes from 19th-century occultism, and some traditions pair Wands with air instead.
